Dolphins of Laos

Canadian conservationist Ian Baird set up the Lao Community Fisheries and Dolphin Protection Project to study the Irrawaddy dolphins in the Lao part of the Mekong. Part of this project compensated fishers for the loss of nets damaged to free entangled dolphins. This project was expanded to include Cambodia, after the majority of the dolphin population was determined to have been killed or migrated to Laos' southern neighbour.[29] The Si Phan Don Wetlands Project has successfully encouraged river communities to set aside conservation zones and establish laws to regulate how and when fish are caught.[30]

Via Enson Inoue: The man who might be able to speak out loud successfully for the Vioceless:

"Had a great meeting with Mayor Sangen. Moving to try to spare as much as the current pod and a movement at cutting down and eventually doing away with the killing! Initially there were 200-300 dolphins.

Spoke to him about the current pod being help and he told me that he will do what he can to see that a portion of this pod be released. He said he couldn't make any promises but he said he will try. He told me that tomorrow will be a day off for the fishermen so if there is any release it won't be until Monday or Tuesday. I can't wait until Monday and Tuesday to come so I can see if Mayor Sangen could pull through. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I have a feeling it will happen. Even if 1 dolphin more was spared because of our meeting I'll be grateful and happy.
He also discussed a meeting they had in the morning that is moving towards trying to cut down on the killing until it is done away with. He said that in the final goal continuing the drive for captivity would continue but after selection they eventually wanted to drive the whole pod back out to sea without any slaughter.

Not 100% the best outcome but definitely a step in the right direction."

Had a great meeting with Mayor Sangen.

Via Elizabeth Batt:
20 dolphins taken for captivity so far. Calf trapped in net. Mother stayed by its side until it was released by divers. Struggled to breathe even though mom tried to help it. It is now floating lifelessly on its back in the cove. If you go to any aquarium, you support this. Don't.
Today in Taiji, a pod of over 100 Bottlenose Dolphins were driven into the cove, where they have now been netted off and left overnight. Tomorrow, they face slaughter.

Where Dolphins Are Revered in Japan
March 15, 2012
On a small island 100 miles from Tokyo islanders, mostly fishermen, have declared resident dolphins to be citizens, fully protected while in the island's waters.
ToshimaDolphins.jpg The fishermen of Toshima Island show us how some Japanese revere and protect wild dolphins. BlueVoice is supporting our long time Japanese ally, Elsa Nature Conservancy, to help the Toshima Islanders educate Japan about the wonders of wild dolphins.
The Toshima Dolphin Project will expand knowledge of this unique island and the relationship between the people of the island and its 16 resident dolphins. It will provide a vision that will inspire their fellow countrymen and bring to them an understanding of the importance of allowing dolphins to remain free and safe from hunters' blades. As we all know, Japan is a nation where up to 20,000 dolphins are killed yearly.
Now we are supporting a dolphin watching initiative at Toshima Island in the hope that contact with wild dolphins and press coverage of this unique development will cause the Japanese people to rally to the protection of dolphins elsewhere in Japan.

Sakae.jpg Here is a description of the Toshima Dolphin Project written by Sakae Hemmi of Elsa Nature Conservancy, long a collaborator with BlueVoice.

Mr.Moriyama&Dolphin.jpg "In 1995 a dolphin came to Toshima waters and remained. In 1998 the dolphin, named Koko, gave birth. The baby was called Piko. The mother and baby were so revered that they were registered as citizens of the island. Around 2010 several dolphins from Mikura island moved to Toshima and several have given birth. As of February 2012, a pod of 16 dolphins swims in the waters of Toshima."
Unfortunately the pivotal man in the Toshima Dolphin Project, Mr. Moriyama, died in February. But others have picked up the banner. Right now funds are urgently needed to finish the project website, send a video team to the island to film the dolphins and fishermen, to make a DVD for release in Japan and to hold a symposium in Tokyo on dolphins in Japanese waters.

Sakae writes further: "I think it important to have many people learn and experience that wild dolphins are animals that we can make friends with and live together. Toshima is a very important place to raise the Japanese people's consciousness to protect wild dolphins."

Everyday between September 1st until March 31st we live in fear of of dolphins dying in Taiji. We have no control over the killings and we have no right to claim we have reduced the numbers killed.
Each day we wait for reports coming out of Taiji to see if the boats have or have not captured dolphins.
Many tears are shed and many emotions are tested.
Our anger increases and our tolerance is tested. We scream and we cry. Some people give up because they can't face the bad news everyday. Some people bury their heads in the sand.
Out of each day should come this, If we give up for the voiceless, we end all hope of these animals existence. Their future is in our hands. Turn your back on these defenseless animals and you become as bad as the killers because YOU know better.
Todays slaughter in Taiji should be used as a catalyst to carry on the fight. For every dolphin that is killed in the cove new energy should be generated in the form of letters, faxes and phone calls. If the animals are finally extinct in Japanese waters you need to always remember you did everything you could possibly muster up.

'Roo slaughter 'cruelest in world'

While I too would like to see the annual slaughter of dolphins in Taiji come to an end, I feel I must correct a number of misstatements made by Ms. Bowen-Saunders regarding the treatment of kangaroos in Australia.
About kangaroo killing, Ms. Bowen-Saunders says: "I have heard the Japanese defend whaling and dolphin murder by saying Australia is hypocritical for killing kangaroos. This is done, however, when numbers have exploded, the animals have eaten all available food and are often starving. They are shot quickly and cleanly by professional shooters. The majority of the time there is no suffering, and the culls are regulated.
"They are not murdered slowly en masse. Almost all Australian wildlife is protected, and culling is done as a last resort, not for annual amusement."

The killing of kangaroos in Australia is the world's largest land-based animal slaughter. The Australian government has sanctioned the commercial killing of over 5 million kangaroos in 2012 alone. Rather than being "a last resort", kangaroo killing is undertaken on a huge scale and for significant commercial gain. It forms the basis of a multimillion-dollar skin and meat industry.

It is important to note that the annual kangaroo quota does not include the baby kangaroos (joeys) killed when their mothers are shot. Female kangaroos often have a joey in their pouch, as well as one at their feet. It is estimated that each year over 1 million joeys are either killed by shooters or left to die of starvation, predation or exposure. Joeys are decapitated, shot or clubbed to death.

Nor does the quota include the kangaroos left in the field because they have not been shot cleanly (and therefore cannot be accepted for processing) or that escape injured and later die. The relevant codes of practice require that kangaroos be shot in the head, but this does not always happen.
Former kangaroo shooter David Nicholls has said: "The mouth of a kangaroo can be blown off and the kangaroo can escape to die of shock and starvation. Forearms can be blown off, as can ears, eyes and noses. Stomachs can be hit, expelling the contents with the kangaroo still alive. Backbones can be pulverized to an unrecognizable state, etc. Hind legs can be shattered with the kangaroo desperately trying to get away on the other or without the use of either. To deny that this goes on is just an exercise in attempting to fool the public."

It is estimated that each year between 120,000 and 1 million kangaroos are mis-shot in this way (unfortunately, due to lack of monitoring a better estimate is not available). It is no wonder Australian animal protection advocates have called kangaroo killing "the cruelest wildlife slaughter in the world."
The quota also does not include the kangaroos shot for recreation. Yes, Australians do shoot kangaroos for their "amusement," including after a few beers. These shooters are not professionals and they do not undergo competency testing, so the animals are even more likely to suffer a painful death.

The fact that kangaroo killing is regulated means little. Policing and enforcement are almost nonexistent because the killing occurs in numerous remote parts of Australia under the cover of night.

There are many similarities between the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji and the killing of Australian kangaroos. In both cases, the animals are killed for their meat or as "pest control," and in both cases they suffer terribly. In terms of scale, however, the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, while horrendous, pales in comparison to the bloodbath taking place in Australia.

As Australians we should not be seeking to defend the killing of kangaroos, or to downplay the extent to which it occurs. If we are horrified by the killing of dolphins in Japan, we should be equally (if not more) appalled by the killing of kangaroos in Australia. We should be pleading with our governments and fellow Australians "Stop the annual kangaroo massacre, make your children proud."

A member of anti-whaling group arrested
NHK Wakayama 2012/10/09

A German member of Sea Shepherd was arrested in Taiji, Wakayama, where whaling season began last month, for hanging down from the whaling monument displayed in a park and damaging it.

The person arrested is a German member of anti-whaling group "Sea Shepherd", Nils Greskewitz (25), who profess himself to be a gardener.

According to police investigation, Greskewitz is suspected of the damage of property for damaging the harpooon of the whaling monument displayed in Taiji "Whale Beach Park" by hanging down from it at around pm 4:30 on the 8th October.

It is reported that Greskewitz is stating that he did not intend to damage the monument.

Greskewitz was walking around the monument with several foreigners in the evening of the 8th October, and the police is further investigating the situation at the time.

In Taiji, the drive fishery of whales and dolphins has began in last month, and the police had been taking precautions against obstructive actions of anti-whaling groups, such as setting up a temporary police box.

According to another member of Sea Shepherd, Greskewitz hung down from the monument while they were taking photos of whale facilities.

During the police investigation, Greskewitz stated that he did not intend to damage the monument.

A female member of Sea Shepherd (Melissa Sehgal) said "It was a careless mistake, he was regretting what he had done was wrong." The affected Taiji town is considering a civil suit, the Mayor Kazutaka Sangen said "It was an act that denies our history, which we cannot condone. We know people have different opinions and appeals, but they should humbly reconsider their conduct resorting to violene or damaging properties."
